An exalted planet has strong sign dignity. It is not automatically good for every matter it rules, fully strong in every calculation, or sufficient to form a named yoga. Give a favorable verdict when its house responsibilities, host and receiving structure support the question. When a powerful planet carries adverse responsibilities into a repeatedly damaged structure, its strength can make the difficulty more effective rather than remove it.
Exaltation (uccha) and total strength are different tests. This reference uses the seven visible grahas, whole-sign natal houses and the named source conventions below.
Exaltation signs and exact points
BPHS, R. Santhanam translation, planetary-character chapter, verses 49–50 gives these signs and deep-exaltation points:
| Graha | Exaltation sign | Deep-exaltation point |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries | 10° |
| Moon | Taurus | 3° |
| Mars | Capricorn | 28° |
| Mercury | Virgo | 15° |
| Jupiter | Cancer | 5° |
| Venus | Pisces | 27° |
| Saturn | Libra | 20° |
The opposite sign at the same degree is the deep-debilitation point. “Exalted in Aries” names the Sun’s sign dignity; “at 10° Aries” identifies its maximum in the specific exaltation-strength calculation. Do not convert either into a probability of success. Node exaltations vary by method and are outside this seven-graha table.
A checked calculation across the sign boundary
In Santhanam’s Evaluation of Strengths, opening Uchcha-Bala passage and translator’s worked explanation, Uchcha Bala is the shorter zodiacal angular distance from the planet’s deep-debilitation point, divided by three. Its scale is 0–60 virupas, with 60 virupas equal to one rupa. This is one component of positional strength, not total Shadbala.
For the Sun, deep debilitation is 10° Libra, longitude 190° from the start of Aries. Let d be the shorter distance to 190°: take the absolute longitude difference and, if it exceeds 180°, subtract it from 360°. Then Uchcha Bala = d ÷ 3.
These are hypothetical longitudes, independently calculated:
| Sun’s position | Zodiac longitude | Shorter distance from 190° | Uchcha Bala, virupas | Exalted by sign? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 29° Pisces | 359° | 169° | 56.33 | No |
| 0° Aries | 0° | 170° | 56.67 | Yes |
| 10° Aries | 10° | 180° | 60.00 | Yes |
| 29° Aries | 29° | 161° | 53.67 | Yes |
| 1° Taurus | 31° | 159° | 53.00 | No |
| 10° Libra | 190° | 0° | 0.00 | No: deeply debilitated |
The unexalted Sun at 29° Pisces has more Uchcha Bala than the exalted Sun at 29° Aries. That does not make Pisces the Sun’s exaltation sign. It shows why the sign label and this continuous distance calculation must remain separate. Crossing into Taurus changes the dignity label, but this component does not abruptly fall to zero.
The figures are conventional calculation units, not “56.33% good results.” They do not measure empirical success, total planetary capacity or the native’s worth. Use the same zodiac and longitude settings throughout. Other strength components, combustion and the relevant house roles remain separate assessments.
Same exalted Saturn, different yoga and responsibilities
Now hold Saturn at 20° Libra in three hypothetical natal charts. Its deep-exaltation position and Uchcha Bala, 60 virupas, are identical. The ascendant changes its house and both ownerships:
| Ascendant | Saturn’s occupied house | Saturn rules | Sasa’s basic sign-and-kendra condition? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leo | Third, Libra | Sixth/Capricorn and seventh/Aquarius | No: third is not a kendra |
| Libra | First, Libra | Fourth/Capricorn and fifth/Aquarius | Yes |
| Capricorn | Tenth, Libra | First/Capricorn and second/Aquarius | Yes |
Rao’s Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach, section 11.4.3 defines Sasa Yoga through Saturn in its own or exaltation sign in a quadrant. The quadrants are 1, 4, 7 and 10. The Leo chart therefore has exalted third-house Saturn but does not meet that basic natal-Lagna definition. It does not become Sasa merely because Saturn is powerful.
The practical judgment also changes. For Leo rising, Saturn carries service/conflict and partnership into self-effort. Strong persistence can coexist with demanding work or binding obligations to others; exaltation is no promise of an easy partnership. Saturn in the third develops the execution and sibling questions.
For Libra rising, fourth and fifth ownership gives Saturn a different route through foundations and learning. For Capricorn rising, Lagna and second ownership links the tenth-house placement with personal work and resources. These are materially different responsibilities, despite an identical dignity score. The favorable configuration becomes a stronger practical result when Venus, Libra’s ruler, and the relevant receiving lords support it. Repeated damage there weakens realization. Meeting Sasa’s basic definition establishes the configuration; it does not guarantee every exalted-Saturn result or a particular rank, profession or fortune.
Give the verdict for the actual question
My verdict is conditional: exaltation strengthens the planet’s capacity in its sign; named responsibilities and supported delivery determine whether that capacity helps the matter being judged. Strong dignity with useful lordship, a capable dispositor and reinforcing periods warrants a strong favorable reading. Strong dignity serving obstructive roles, with repeated damage to the relevant house or lord, warrants a difficult reading even when the planet is exalted.
Do not replace that judgment with “exaltation is always good” or treat all strength calculations as interchangeable. For Jupiter specifically, this site’s practitioner method also distinguishes elemental comfort from formal dignity: Taurus and Virgo are not its debilitation signs, and a protective aspect cannot fully rescue a severely weakened receiving lord. Those attributed Jupiter rules are developed in Jupiter in Lagna and the aspect guide; they are not universal claims about every exalted graha.
Read natural versus functional roles, sign rulers and debilitation with cancellation as distinct tests. The foundations path connects them. A strong label begins the assessment; checked mechanics and an actual judgment complete it.
