A debilitated planet is impaired in its sign. If no stated cancellation rule applies, do not rename that weakness a hidden Raja Yoga. A valid Neecha Bhanga condition can alter the judgment, but a cancelled label does not prove that the restored planet can produce wealth, authority or success in the house you are asking about.
The useful sequence is: establish debility, test the exact rule, judge the participating planets’ capacity, then decide which practical result can manifest.
The seven conventional debilitation signs
The dignity scheme in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, planetary-dignity verses 49–50, Santhanam edition places debility opposite exaltation at the corresponding degree. The deepest point is a dignity reference, not an event date or a percentage of failure.
| Planet | Debilitation sign | Deepest point |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Libra | 10° |
| Moon | Scorpio | 3° |
| Mars | Cancer | 28° |
| Mercury | Pisces | 15° |
| Jupiter | Capricorn | 5° |
| Venus | Virgo | 27° |
| Saturn | Aries | 20° |
Node dignities are school-dependent and excluded from this table. The exaltation reference gives the opposite positions. A planet can also be combust; cancellation of sign debility does not establish freedom from Sun proximity.
Use a named cancellation rule
This compact checklist follows Mantreswara’s Phaladeepika, chapter 7, verses 26–30, as translated and discussed by G. S. Kapoor (passages and Notes). Kendra means first, fourth, seventh or tenth, counted inclusively.
| Verse | Condition in this edition |
|---|---|
| 26 | Debility-sign lord or planet exalted in that sign angular from Lagna or Moon |
| 27 | Debility-sign lord and lord of the planet’s own exaltation sign mutually angular |
| 28 | Debility-sign lord aspects the debilitated planet |
| 29 | Debility-sign lord or lord of the planet’s own exaltation sign angular from Lagna or Moon |
| 30 | Debilitated planet itself angular from Lagna or Moon |
The chapter predicts powerful rise. Our practical judgment separately tests whether the participating planets can deliver it. The same angular lord can satisfy overlapping rows; that is one supporting configuration, not two independent reinforcements. An exaltation-sign lord’s aspect alone does not satisfy row 28.
“Planet exalted there” and “lord of its exaltation sign” differ
Kapoor’s Notes discuss Uchchanatha using debilitated Saturn in Aries: one reading selects Sun, exalted in Aries; another Venus, ruling Libra, where Saturn exalts. Kapoor prefers Sun for verse 26 and accepts either of its alternatives.
For that Saturn, Mars is the dispositor, Sun the planet exalted in the occupied sign, and Venus the lord of Saturn’s exaltation sign. Record which role you tested. Choosing Sun for row 26 does not remove Venus from row 29. Thus a translation choice can change one row without changing the final cancellation finding. Do not declare the entire chart “uncancelled” after checking only the disputed term.
Worked test: cancellation through the planet itself
Consider this hypothetical whole-sign configuration: Capricorn rising; Sun in Libra; Moon in Aries; Venus in Scorpio; Mars in Pisces; Saturn in Gemini. It is a rule illustration, not a dated birth or owner client case. We are testing only the five rows above, not every school’s additional rules or divisional chart.
For Sun in Libra, the three relevant supporting roles are Venus (Libra’s lord), Saturn (exalted in Libra), and Mars (Aries’ lord, Sun’s exaltation-sign lord).
| Check | Calculated relationship | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Venus or Saturn angular? | Venus is 11th from Lagna/8th from Moon; Saturn is 6th/3rd | Row 26 fails |
| Venus and Mars mutually angular? | Their separation is fifth/ninth | Row 27 fails |
| Venus aspects Sun? | Venus in Scorpio casts its full seventh to Taurus | Row 28 fails |
| Venus or Mars angular? | Mars is 3rd from Lagna/12th from Moon; Venus remains 11th/8th | Row 29 fails |
| Sun itself angular? | Libra is 10th from Capricorn and 7th from Aries | Row 30 passes |
Cancellation is established under this edition’s checklist through row 30 alone. A summary omitting that row would misclassify this configuration. Conversely, adding all the failed support tests to a verbal claim of “many cancellation factors” would exaggerate it. The graha-drishti guide explains the directed aspect used in row 28.
What this does—and does not—restore
For Capricorn rising, Sun owns the eighth, not the ninth or tenth. Its placement in the tenth gives the public-work question an eighth-house responsibility. A cancellation finding does not change that ownership or make Sun exalted in Aries.
My conditional judgment is qualified recovery, not a demonstrated powerful rise. The supplied positions establish the rule, while Sun’s other strength factors and the career lord’s capacity are unspecified. I would not sell this configuration alone as an effortless authority or wealth yoga. If the tenth lord and the Sun are further badly afflicted without useful protection, career continuity and recognition remain vulnerable despite the cancellation label. With capable support, difficult eighth-house material can become usable expertise rather than merely disruption. This is a house-lord application, not another verse or an asserted biography.
Mitigation is not automatically Neecha Bhanga
InsightAstrology’s owner distinguishes formal dignity from elemental comfort. Jupiter’s conventional debility is Capricorn; Taurus and Virgo are not its debilitation signs. In the owner’s Capricorn-Lagna reading, a capable Saturn can limit a difficult Jupiter’s expression. That is dispositor/ascendant support. Call it Neecha Bhanga only after stating which named rule actually passes.
This distinction matters because help can be real even when a particular yoga test fails. It also works in the other direction: a formal rule can pass while the support needed for the desired result remains poor. Jupiter’s ascendant interpretation develops the owner’s sign, star and dispositor method; Jupiter in the sixth shows a different house responsibility.
The final practitioner judgment
No applicable rule, no cancellation under that rule set. Keep the debility judgment and identify the actual help rather than inventing a reversal. If a condition passes, name it and then judge the restored function: which house does the planet own, what supports it, and can the relevant receiving house and lord use that capacity?
Strong participating planets, useful house responsibilities and effective support strengthen recovery. Repeated weakness of the planet, dispositor and relevant house lord weakens it; separate combustion or affliction can obstruct delivery. Relevant periods determine activation, but a period does not repair missing capacity by itself. Repeatedly damaged factors with no effective help warrant a poor-result judgment, not a promise that suffering must eventually become success.
This article’s verse references belong to the stated editions. The worked positions are independently counted editorial illustrations; the Capricorn-Jupiter distinction is the owner’s practitioner method. They are not empirical probabilities. Sign rulers and friendships and the foundations path supply the underlying vocabulary.
