Benefic (shubha) and malefic (papa or krura) are traditional classifications of grahas in Jyotish. They are labels used in chart interpretation, not a judgment that a person or planet is morally good or bad. Benefics tend to support, reconcile or preserve; malefics can apply pressure, separation or demanding effort. Whether these functions help or obstruct the question depends on house rulership, dignity and the receiving structure.

Natural classification and its exceptions

The planetary-classification passages of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra distinguish relatively benefic and malefic grahas and note conditional treatment for Mercury and the Moon. A practical starting reference is:

Often treated as naturally benefic Often treated as naturally malefic Depends on condition or convention
Jupiter, Venus Sun, Mars, Saturn; Rahu and Ketu in many lists Mercury; Moon’s waxing or waning phase

Traditional texts commonly regard a waxing Moon more favorably and a waning Moon less favorably. Mercury is often treated as more benefic or malefic according to its associations with other planets. Different translations and interpretive lineages qualify these rules, and the Moon’s phase or Mercury’s conjunction is only part of a full chart. A supported Mercury can negotiate constructively while difficult associations redirect its skill; Moon’s phase must be read with its sign lord and house context before deciding how much support it provides.

Natural versus functional role

“Natural” describes a general traditional classification. “Functional” concerns the houses a planet rules for a particular ascendant. For example, with Taurus rising in a whole-sign chart, Saturn rules the ninth and tenth. Many practitioners therefore discuss its functional role differently from its natural malefic label. Supported Saturn can connect ninth-house opportunity with tenth-house action in this example. Affliction or a weak dispositor can obstruct that delivery during its periods. The ascendant and houses show why house rulership changes from chart to chart.

Begin with the natural function, identify the houses carried, then assess the planet’s capacity to deliver and the period activating it. Planetary friendships describe a different, directional relationship between planets; sign rulership is another separate concept. For the full set of grahas, see Planets in Jyotish.
