Combust Jupiter (asta Guru) places Jupiter close to the Sun under a stated orb convention. In Jyotish this can restrict the independent expression of counsel, learning and judgment. Strong sign and dispositor support can preserve those functions; repeated weakness can make guidance harder to use or knowledge subordinate to a stronger authority.
Check the condition before interpreting it
Find the Sun–Jupiter longitude gap using the shortest distance around the zodiac. The technical combustion reference gives the calculation and a qualified table. In Santhanam’s Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra translation, the 11° Jupiter value appears in the translator’s notes for both direct and retrograde motion. Other sources or tools may apply different conventions. After checking the orb, assess Jupiter’s sign, dispositor and house responsibilities to identify which function is most affected.
Do not confuse combustion with dignity
Jupiter in Capricorn is conventionally debilitated; Jupiter in Cancer is conventionally exalted. These are sign placements, whereas combustion concerns proximity to the Sun. A reader should check the sign ruler, Jupiter’s house rulership for the ascendant and other chart relationships, not add “combust + debilitated” to derive a numeric weakness score.
Suppose Jupiter occupies the ninth house with the Sun. A strong ninth lord and supported Jupiter can preserve access to instruction even when the Sun strongly shapes its delivery. If the ninth lord and Jupiter are both damaged, guidance may be interrupted or dominated by authority. In the fifth, the question shifts to learning and progeny; assess the fifth lord and relevant divisional support separately.
Can it contribute to progeny difficulty? Yes, as one weakening factor when the fifth and its lord, Jupiter and relevant D7 or timing factors repeat the problem. A strong fifth lord and substantial benefic support can modify the conclusion. The same orb in a chart with strong protection deserves a different judgment.
Is there a prescribed Guru remedy? First identify whether Jupiter is helpful in its functional role and what is obstructing it. An orb label does not establish that a gemstone or any other strengthening practice is appropriate.
