The ascendant (lagna) is the zodiac position rising at the eastern horizon at a selected time and place. In many Jyotish chart styles it anchors the first house; the remaining houses are counted around the chart from that point. A house identifies the life area being assessed. Its lord, occupants, aspects and activating periods explain how that area is likely to develop.

A simple map of house topics

Houses Topics often discussed
1–3 Self, resources and speech, effort and siblings
4–6 Home, learning and creativity, service and difficulty
7–9 Partnership, shared matters, belief and teachers
10–12 Public work, networks and gains, retreat and expenditure

These are shorthand categories, not exhaustive definitions. The house-signification passages of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra give historical context; modern applications extend or question some old associations. For a resource question, for example, the second describes retention, the eleventh gains and the twelfth outflow; their lords and connections determine whether the pattern is sustainable.

Reading a house in context

First identify the ascendant and the sign occupying the house you are interested in. Then find the planet ruling that sign, where it is placed and which planets occupy or aspect the house. Traditions use differing house systems and divisional techniques, so a practitioner should say which system underlies a claim.

Because the ascendant changes with time and place, an uncertain birth time can change house assignments. Check which house and divisional assignments remain stable under the plausible time range. Develop the judgment from those stable factors, and resolve timing uncertainty before relying on a changing Lagna or fine division.

For the four principal angles, see angular houses. The Jyotish foundations hub connects house vocabulary with planets and relationships.
