Reading note: A single placement does not dictate your whole life. Consider opting for a complete, personalized Vedic consultation from a trusted source to understand your horoscope better.

The angular houses, or kendras, are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses counted from the ascendant in a Jyotish chart. These houses provide principal settings for personal direction, home, partnership and public action. A capable planet in a kendra has a prominent channel for its functions; its rulership and condition determine what it delivers there.

How the four houses differ

House Common traditional topic A useful chart question
First The person and the way the chart is oriented What other factors affect this planet and the ascendant?
Fourth Home and private life How does the house ruler connect with the wider chart?
Seventh Spouse and one-to-one partnership What does the seventh ruler contribute?
Tenth Public work and action How do ruler and planet condition affect the reading?

These topics reflect conventional house significations in texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The prompts in the third column are contemporary ways to organise a reading. To develop the judgment, combine the occupied house with its lord and the planet’s actual strength.

Why call them angular?

In a horoscope diagram, the houses at intervals of three from the first form four principal angles. Some Jyotish techniques give kendra placements particular structural importance, especially when evaluating certain yogas. The yoga’s other conditions still need checking: which planet is involved, the sign and house rulership, and the exact rule being cited. A planet in the tenth is not automatically “strong,” just as a planet in the seventh is not automatically good for marriage.

To locate these houses, start with the ascendant and its twelve houses. Compare cadent houses and the Jyotish foundations reading path. A strong house lord helps the angular placement realize its promise; a weakened one identifies where support is still needed.
