Combust Saturn (asta Shani) places Saturn near the Sun under a stated orb. It can bring tension between Saturn’s duty, restraint and sustained work and the Sun’s direction or authority. Strong sign and dispositor support help those functions cooperate; repeated weakness can make responsibility difficult to carry or recognition harder to obtain.
Solar proximity is one condition

Santhanam’s translator notes to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra list 16° for Saturn in both direct and retrograde columns. Treat this as one documented convention, not as a table of career or health severity. Two planets can be in the same sign yet fail a particular narrow orb test.
Natural relationship, sign dignity and rulership
Traditional planetary-friendship classifications often count the Sun and Saturn as natural enemies. Their natural enmity describes one source of tension; the actual sign, house roles and dispositor determine how constructively they can work together. Saturn in Aries has the conventional debilitation label, while Libra is its exaltation sign. Libra can give Saturn more capacity for measured responsibility than Aries, but the occupied house and its lord still determine delivery.
Next ask which houses Saturn rules for the ascendant. In a hypothetical Taurus-rising whole-sign chart, Saturn rules the ninth and tenth; the same Sun proximity elsewhere in a chart has different rulership connections. This is why a short “combust Saturn = career failure” formula skips essential chart information. For Taurus rising, assess whether ninth- and tenth-house support survives the solar restriction before judging professional realization.
Compare Saturn in the eighth for a distinct house question about traditional uncertainty and shared matters; the Sun’s orb is a separate issue. In that house, Saturn’s longevity and shared-obligation roles need an eighth-lord and Lagna assessment; solar proximity modifies Saturn rather than replacing those factors.
Can it contribute to delay or longevity weakness? If Saturn carries relevant relationship responsibilities and the seventh lord, Venus and D9 repeat the difficulty, solar restriction can add to a delay judgment. Longevity requires its own Lagna–eighth-house structure and timing. Strong support in either structure can modify the difficult Saturn indication.
Are remedies necessary? Determine Saturn’s functional role and the actual obstruction before recommending a strengthening practice. The same Saturn can be helpful for one ascendant and carry more difficult responsibilities for another.
