A Moon near the Sun raises two related but different questions: how close are their chart longitudes, and what lunar phase does that relationship describe? Some Jyotish readers call a close Moon asta or combust; others give greater weight to the tithi and the Moon’s waxing or waning condition. The practical reading weighs how much lunar support remains through phase, sign, dispositor and house condition, rather than treating one proximity label as the whole assessment.

Combustion and the new Moon are different descriptions

The general combustion reference explains the shortest Sun–Moon longitude gap and documents a 12° Moon threshold in R. Santhanam’s translator notes to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. A threshold in one translation’s notes is not a universal rule, or a sliding scale of emotional harm.

Amavasya names the new-Moon phase in the lunar cycle; tithi is a lunar-day division calculated from the Sun–Moon angular relationship. The Moon’s lighted appearance depends on Sun–Earth–Moon geometry. NASA’s Moon-phase explanation describes that geometry, not astrological effects. A chart program’s “combust” label and a calendar’s phase label answer different questions even when both use the Sun–Moon relationship. An eclipse is a further geometric event and must not be assumed from a new Moon or a horoscope label.

How phase and house support change the reading

First check the actual separation and the software’s convention. Then note phase, sign, house, Moon’s rulership and other chart relationships. Traditional benefic/malefic classification may treat a waxing and waning Moon differently. A supported Moon can retain useful receptivity and continuity despite a close Sun relationship; repeated weakness in its dispositor and occupied house can make its delivery more difficult.

For a Sun–Moon conjunction in the eighth, examine the eighth lord and Lagna factors before judging the ability to manage change. Strong support can help the native respond to complicated shared matters; repeated affliction can make them more unsettling. The Moon in the eighth article develops the house and longevity structure separately from phase.

What does a weak Moon contribute to the reading? Within Jyotish, repeated weakness of Moon, its dispositor and relevant house lords can indicate difficulty maintaining a settled response to the affected life area. Phase alone is not a diagnosis of depression or a sleep disorder; the chart judgment should name the specific support or obstruction instead.

Is the Moon “destroyed” near the Sun? No. The label describes a traditional proximity rule; it does not erase lunar phases, house topics or all other chart context. A person does not need a gemstone or prescribed ritual because of a generic orb.
