Combust Mars is about Mangala’s angular distance from the Sun under a particular Jyotish rule. Manglik or Kuja dosha is a separate, variable house-based marriage-screening convention. The two labels cannot be exchanged: one concerns a Sun–Mars proximity calculation, the other where Mars appears relative to a chart reference point. Combustion asks how Mars can deliver action and initiative beside the Sun; Manglik assessment asks how Mars interacts with the relationship structure.
Which question does each rule answer?
For combustion, check Sun and Mars longitudes in the same zodiac, find the shortest circular difference and name the threshold. The general combustion reference presents 17° for direct and 8° for retrograde Mars from Santhanam’s translator notes to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. These values are a documented convention, not a universal severity scale.
Manglik discussions instead count Mars from the ascendant and, in some lineages, from the Moon or Venus; the lists of houses and exceptions vary. A reader should ask for the specific source and house-counting rule rather than assume a universal formula. Mars in the seventh house could raise a Manglik question without being close to the Sun; combust Mars need not occupy any house used by that marriage convention. A relationship judgment then requires the seventh lord, Venus, relevant D9 factors, protective influences and timing. Repeated affliction strengthens the concern; meaningful support can reduce it.
Mars dignity and the reading context
Mars is conventionally debilitated in Cancer and exalted in Capricorn under the seven-planet dignity scheme. A planet can meet a sign-dignity condition and a Sun-distance condition at once; adding labels does not produce a percentage score for courage or wellbeing.
Mars contributes initiative, contest and effort. A strong sign lord can help that force serve the Sun’s direction; repeated weakness can make action frustrated or poorly coordinated. In the sixth house, inspect whether Lagna and the sixth lord support the response to opposition. In the eighth, the eighth lord and joint-resource structure determine whether intervention helps resolve or intensifies a difficult obligation.
How serious is the restriction? Compare Mars’s dignity and dispositor with the Sun’s condition, the occupied house and both planets’ functional lordships. Compounded weakness makes ineffective or conflict-driven action a stronger interpretation; strong support can preserve disciplined execution. An accident or violence claim requires a separate, developed assessment and should not be inferred from the orb.
